Celebrating Dr. Malin During Women’s History Month!

March is Women’s History Month, a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society. Originating in the United States in 1987, this month provides an opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate these achievements, which may have been overlooked or marginalized in traditional culture.

Here at Wilton Smiles we’re thrilled to shine a spotlight on the incredible achievements of women in the dentistry field, AND even closer to home, we honor our very own, Dr. Mariya Malin!

Women in the Dentistry Field

Based on data reported by the American Dental Association, there are 202,304 dentists working in dentistry. As of 2023, 37.7% are female.

Dental school enrollment is now 50-50 gender split, so that is the main reason why we are seeing more dentists who are women in the workforce,” said Marko Vujicic, Ph.D., chief economist and vice president of the American Dental Association Health Policy Institute.

According to the Health Policy Institute:

  • Dental school graduates who are women grew from 46% to 50.6% between 2009 and 2019
  • The percentage of dentists in the workforce who are women grew from 24.1% to 34.5% between 2010 and 2020
  • Predicts the dentist workforce will reach gender parity by 2040

Some notable women in the dentistry field include:

As we celebrate the accomplishments Women’s History Month, here are some trailblazing women in the dental field:

Emeline Roberts Jones: During an era when the concept of a female dentist was met with skepticism, she is recognized as the world’s first practicing female dentist. From 1876 until her retirement in 1915, Jones ran her own practice in New Haven, CT, which became one of the largest and most lucrative practices in the entire state. Additionally, she made extensive contributions to pediatric dentistry, developing specialized techniques and tools for younger patients. As the first in her field, she broke gender barriers and contributed significantly to the profession’s acceptance of women.

Ida Gray Nelson Rollins: Overcoming both gender and racial barriers, Rollins was the first African-American woman to earn a dental surgery degree in 1890. As Chicago’s first black female dentist, Rollins later established her dental practice in Cincinnati.

Minnie Evangeline Jordan: In 1898, Minnie Evangeline Jordan became the first U.S. dentist specializing in pediatric dentistry. Her work laid the groundwork for Pedodontics, focusing on improving pediatric dental care and developing new techniques.

Geraldine Morrow: Morrow became the first female president of the American Dental Association in 1991. Throughout her career, she was a champion for equity and inclusion in dentistry.

Meet Dr. Malin—the Leader of Wilton Smiles

Dr. Mariya Malin has been practicing dentistry for over 17 years and has extensive experience with a variety of dental procedures including routine check-ups, restorative work, oral surgeries, and cosmetic treatments.

As founder and owner of Wilton Smiles, a modern dental practice located in Fairfield County, Dr. Malin is committed to her patients’ health and well-being through cutting-edge, compassionate, and personalized dental care. Dr. Malin has owned and operated Wilton Smiles since October 2020.

Prior to starting her practice in Connecticut, she was the owner of The One & Only Dental Care in Brooklyn, NY for 15 years. “Patient comfort is a top priority for me. I take the time to explain procedures in detail, use gentle techniques, and offer local anesthesia when needed. Additionally, I maintain a calm and friendly demeanor to help ease any anxiety my patients might have,” said Dr. Malin.

Committed to lifelong learning and professional development, Dr. Malin is an active member of American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, New York State Dental Society, and Second District Dental Society. She regularly attends dental conferences, workshops, and webinars to stay updated on the latest research, techniques, and technologies in the field.
