Understanding Periodontal Care

Dr. Marquis has an essential role in helping patients maintain good oral health,  particularly in managing advanced gum diseases and conditions affecting the jawbone.

What causes gum disease?

Gum disease is caused by bacteria found in plaque and tartar. To keep gums in good condition, patients must brush and floss at least twice every day, schedule yearly teeth cleanings and checkups, and watch what you eat and drink.

According to the Mayo Clinic, gum disease not only impacts the condition of one’s mouth, but overall health. An individual’s oral health might play a part in conditions including endocarditis, cardiovascular disease, pregnancy and birth complications, and pneumonia.

There are 3 stages of gum disease:

  1. Gingivitis: In this early stage there are red, swollen, tender gums that bleed easily.
  2. Mild to moderate periodontitis: Increased inflammation and bleeding around the tooth, which may lead to the gums pulling away from the teeth, forming pockets of infected material. Early bone loss around the teeth may occur and treatment is crucial to prevent more bone loss and teeth from getting loose.
  3. Advanced periodontitis: Gum pockets have gotten deeper, resulting in heavy destruction of bone that holds teeth in place. In these severe cases, teeth may need to be removed if treatment doesn’t restore bone support.
